6th Grade Weekly Update - Final Week

Thanks for coming to Madison everyone!  I thought it was a great field trip.  I had never done it before and glad I got to experience it.

NEVER TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT DOING YOUR 5 COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS FOR 7TH GRADE!  May as well get it done when you can.

Schedule for this final week:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday are fairly normal days of school, as normal as school days can get.
  • Thursday is Track and Field Day, Picnic Lunch, Locker Clean Outs, Book Returns
  • Friday is our closing service.  We will be dismissed at 10:00.  Weather permitting, this will be outside.

NOTE FROM MRS. YURK!

National Lutheran Junior Honor Society:  Incoming sixth - eighth graders for the 2022-2023 school year with a  cumulative grade point average of a 3.75 or higher have the opportunity to apply for membership in our National Lutheran Junior Honor Society.  This organization is truly one of service where we intentionally seek out ways to serve in both our church and school as well as the greater community and world.  One of our main projects has been to support Building Hope in Haiti’s work, raising funds to support two students’ education and donate toward their community medical clinic.

The Application Forms can be found on the spl website -- https://www.splgrafton.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/22-23ApplicationServiceHourForms.pdf -- to print for your use.  Service hours and essays as well as letters of recommendation -- for new members only -- are needed, and with the busy summer schedules, I just wanted to give you this information once again.  Applications and the documented service hours are due September 19th, 2022.

English

We will be starting our final writing project this week. As we are working on persuasive writing and how to write and develop strong reasons to support our claim, we will be doing a persuasive project that requires “selling” a product created by each group. This will be a partner project, so I will be encouraging students to choose someone who they work well with since their final grade will be a shared grade based on their final product.

Health

The tests were very good overall!  We will continue with mental health (self concept, self esteem) next week.

Reading

The Esperanza Rising final projects are due on Monday. We’ve been working in groups on board games that represent the conflicts and characters in our class novel, so we will be playing those games on Monday. Since we’ll have a weird amount left for the school year, I’ve decided that we’ll end our school year together with a class read aloud. I will be reading Front Desk by Kelly Yang to the class. The theme of this mini-unit is social issues, so we will continue to use our reading strategies from Esperanza Rising for this story.

Religion

6th Religion This week in 6th grade, we are learning about Jesus’s Enemies Deny the Resurrection and The Empty Tomb. No More Memory Tests!

Science

Social Studies

We are working toward completing our final project, creating scrapbook pages about our social studies units for this year.

Vocab

The unit 15A test will be on Tuesday. Homework is due then as well.

Quarter Class

Keys to the week: Wash your PE shirts!  We will do a high jump competition this week and start a unit on volleyball.
