What is 1st Grade Learning? 

Religion

We will read about Jesus Feeding the 5,000 and Jesus Walking on Water.  We will discuss how Jesus helps and protects us each day.  We will also discuss how instead of worrying, we should confidently put all our cares in God's hands.          

Memory: - Psalm 50:15 Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

Reading

We will work on comprehension skills including making predictions and retelling a story with a beginning, middle and end.     

Reading Fluency Skill:   Reading at an appropriate rate (not too fast or slow) and volume (not too loud or soft)

Phonics: Vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, igh, ew, ue, oo, ou, ow, oi, oy, aw, al) 

Spelling: Unit 31 long e (y, ey, ie, ei)

Writing

We will finish our poetry unit with a wish poem.  We will also write in our journals.   

Grammar:  Personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, they, we)

Math

Unit 12:  Students will organize data using tally charts and interpret data by answering "how many?" questions.  Students will solve problems involving comparisons by interpreting data.  

Science

Light:  Lesson 1 and 2-  Observe light and light and matter

Social Studies

Unit 5:  Our Nation-  Students will find Wisconsin on a map of the United States and explain what is special about our state.  Students will also find our country on a map and describe the locations of our country's neighbors.

Fieldtrips -  We will travel to the Milwauke Symphony on Tuesday and to Camp Y-Koda on May 28th.  

Literacy Night -  We enjoyed a fun evening exploring many different literacy centers including dinosaurs, bees, butterflies, magnets, the 5 senses and more.  

Grafton Summer School - Grafton is excited to announce the return of their Summer Learning Program, featuring both enrichment and academic (remedial) courses tailored to meet the diverse needs of students. Enrichment Courses: These courses are open to all students residing in Grafton, without the need for a teacher's recommendation. The offerings will be detailed in our upcoming summer school brochure. Registration for these enrichment courses will commence on Thursday, April 4. Reading Road Race Rally -      Upcoming souvenir dates:   4/29  Peters  5/6 Proefrock  5/13 Kaae 5/20 Pegelow    The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally.  We will participate in this with Mrs. Boyce's class.  Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week.  A star should be colored in for each reading session.  Please note that shoeboxes (Glove Compartments) can stay at home to be filled with the souvenirs that are brought home each week.

Room Parent/Event Coordinator-     Thank you to Dana Pegelow for volunterring to be our roomparent this year and Angie Check for being our event coordinator.    

Snack -    Please send a healthy snack with your child each day.  I will have extra snacks available in case it is forgotten on a busy morning.  Waterbottles can be used throughout the day and can be refilled at the drinking fountain.
