Weekly Update - October 16th

Weekly Updates

What a week!  We’ve gone from 80 degrees and sunny to the 40s with wind and rain.  We’ve also got the Brewers going to the World Series - things have been exciting.  Next week looks like we’ll still have nice weather, but you should probably make sure your child has a coat that fits - cooler recesses are right around the corner.  A big thank you to our room parents Sandi Ryan and Katie Hansen for coordinating our 4th grade basket for the auction.  We appreciate all of your time and effort in creating this.

What We Did This Week

Reading: Your child should continue to bring an age level appropriate independent reading book with them that travels back and forth from home to school.  Ideally your child should be spending an average of 20 minutes/evening reading their book. Please have them fill out their reading response log when they read. The current reading response log is due this Monday!   Next week we will have some class time set aside for building our reading stamina.  It is truly necessary that your child have their current independent reading book at school.

We just finished our first reading unit.  One of our focuses throughout this unit has been to think about how a place can affect how we live.  We’ve explored many different places throughout each of our stories.  To wrap things up we are spending some time exploring some of our country’s national parks.  Next week the kids will design their own national park and think about what that might look like to live near one.

Writing: We are going to be turning in the rough drafts of our personal narrative on Tuesday.  The final copies will be due Tuesday, October 27th.

Math: We started unit 5 this week.  We will be learning about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, and patterns. 

Religion: This week we learned about the Israelites actions after Joshua’s death.  We learned about Gideon and how he was one of the judges sent to lead the Israelites.

Spelling: We are not learning a new spelling pattern this week.  Instead, we are reviewing the words we’ve learned from unit 1.

Social Studies: Right now, we are spending some time learning about the European explorers that came to America as well as the reasons why other Europeans came here to settle.
