Writing

  • Our next Pattern of Power reviews the basics of Infinitives, verbals that follow the pattern of “to + verb.”  Writers need to recognize them in order to develop their work with ideas or descriptions that carry the impact of a verb.  One student won the gold star with her response to the following:  Shakespeare liked to use them in Hamlet.  Be sure to relay the most famous line that contains an infinitive to me via email.  You know that you will truly make my day. 🙂  I will gladly give out another gold star or two. 🙂
  • Writing:  We’ll begin an argumentative piece, containing a claim and reliable support.

Reading

We just began Between Shades of Gray, learning what it meant to be taken by the Russian soldiers.  Beginning in 1941 the novel is set in Lithuania and Russia as the Soviet Union is annexing the surrounding countries.  It traces the lives of the author’s family as they were taken from their homes with only a suitcase.  Some mature topics -- historical facts -- are presented, and as a class, we have already addressed how we will read them -- with the purpose of better understanding the characters and allowing ourselves to feel sympathy for their circumstances as well as gain a more thorough understanding of the time period.  We will also recognize the incredible faith and strength Ruta Sepetys’s family displayed.
