Labor Day: In many ways, starting off the school year slowly has its perks. It is kind of a soft launch to what is to come. At the same time it can prolong the inevitable of full 5 day school weeks. At any rate, I pray your time together this weekend is enjoyable and fulfilling. Know that your labor is not in vain as long as it is done in the name of the Lord.
- Reading Logs: These will start next week unlike I stated at Back to School Night. It just makes more sense to start them fresh with a new week.
- ELA (English Language Arts) Checklist: Your child may talk about an ELA checklist which is a list of items related to our reading, writing, and spelling that I’m looking for students to work on while I’m connecting with small groups or individual students. I usually star (*) the top items which is the indication that these should be completed for a grade. The other items are for them to accomplish if they have time. Students typically have about 90 minutes per week to get these items done. Most will never need to complete something on the list as homework, while others may not use time as wisely and need to finish at home. I’ll send in my email an example so you can see what I mean.
- Reading: Our Reading curriculum will begin this week as students discover much through reading Why the Sky is Far Away which is a folktale. We will also take a closer look at analyzing graphic features and inferring theme.
- Writing: As we get into our routine we will be talking about the what to do when we think we are done, what to do if we are stuck on spelling, and free write using our given strategies. Additionally we will talk about a grammar piece which includes identifying verbs.
- Math: This is taught by Miss Szydel. Students will begin working with Unit 2 – Use Place Value to Add and Subtract Fluently to 1,000. This past week in math, we discussed our math expectations and how to be problem solvers. We looked at various ways to approach a problem and how to construct arguments to support our thinking. This upcoming week, we are going to use place value to fluently add and subtract within 1,000. We will also be talking about different ways to round numbers to estimate answers.
- Spelling: Each week students will be introduced to ten specific words that have a shared pattern. This week the pattern is adding an inflected ending – s, es, ies. While learning the words is important, it is essential for students to understand the rule. Students will have the chance to work with the words throughout the week. Our final test will be on Friday.
- Religion: This week we will walk move from the Garden of Eden and understand jealousy through the story of Cain and Able. Then we will take a closer look at the faith Noah had during the Great Flood.
- Memory Work: Memory work/spelling sheets will be sent home on Monday. Tuesday’s verse corresponds with Luther’s Small Catechism and is the Lord’s Prayer while Thursday’s verse pertains to our Bible story in Romans 6:23.
- Powerful Panther Pillars: This year we will be working through the fruits of the spirit through a variety of means. Our first pillar is LOVE!
- Weekly Verse: Therefore my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on Earth, as it is in in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
