Week of September 27

Harvest!  Harvest season is here.  Do you see farmers spending countless hours in their fields to bring in the yearly crops?  I think it would be very satisfying for them to cultivate what they have watched grow throughout the season.  Thinking about cultivating makes me think of watching your children.  They are planting so many seeds of knowledge while we get to be active participants in helping them cultivate it.  What a blessing to see their growth already as they become their own person!  Let’s also make sure to cultivate our own faith life and not watch it die.

  • Musical!!!:  Your child has been working very hard to be ready for the musical.  You will see multiple rehearsals in our schedule next week.  Please join us for either performance on Friday at 9 am and/or 6 pm.  If you need more information please refer to the letter sent home with your child on Friday.
  • Test Week:  I know there are a lot of test on Friday.  Please note that students were given a study guide Friday that should be completed at home.  We will review for correct answers on Monday and have the rest of the week to go over the notes.  I told students that if they know the study guide, they will do amazing on the test.  Students will need to turn in the study guide and activity book on Friday prior to taking the test.
  • Reading: Our Reading curriculum continues this week as students discover much through reading The Golden Flower which is a myth. We will also take a closer look at descriptive language and visualizing details.
  • Writing: We are talking about the 6 Traits of Writing which are Ideas, Organization, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Voice, Conventions.  Knowing these traits will help us be better writers.  Additionally we will talk about a grammar piece which includes identifying common and proper nouns.
  • Math: This is taught by Miss Szydel. Students will begin working with Unit 2 – Use Place Value to Add and Subtract Fluently to 1,000.  This past week in math, we learned how to use addition to help us subtract, decompose numbers, and fluently add and subtract within 1,000.This upcoming week, we will continue practicing fluency with addition and subtraction within 1,000. We will also have several review days to help us prepare for our first math test on Friday, October 2nd!
  • Spelling: Each week students will be introduced to ten specific words that have a shared pattern.  This week the pattern is dipthongs which are vowel teams that make a new sound like – oi, ou – as in voice and mouth.  While learning the words is important, it is essential for students to understand the rule.  Students will have the chance to work with the words throughout the week.  Our final test will be on Friday.
  • Religion: This week we will continue to work through Genesis with our discussions surrounding Abraham.  This week we will focus on God answering his prayer for a son and how God tests his faith.
  • Memory Work: Memory work/spelling sheets will be sent home on Monday.  Tuesday’s verse corresponds with Luther’s Small Catechism and is the 3rd Commandment.  This continues our journey through all of the commandments.  Students must know the commandment and what does this mean.  Thursday’s verse pertains to our Bible story in Romans 8:28.
  • Powerful Panther Pillars: This year we will be working through the fruits of the spirit through a variety of means.  Our second pillar is JOY!
  • Weekly Verse: You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart. – Psalm 104:14-15
