What is 1st Grade Learning?

Religion |
We will go back to the Old Testament and read about the Passover and Crossing the Red Sea. We will discuss how God used the blood of the Passover lambs to save his people from death and how God saved us from death in hell by the blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God. Virtue of the Week: RESPONSIBILITY: God’s power for you to be accountable to God and others. Big Question- How can you honor God through the variety of responsibilities He gives you? Memory: 4th Commandment: Honor your father and your mother. |

Reading |
We will begin a new nonfiction reading unit. The students will review making predictions and rereading to make sure they understand the details in their books. Phonics: Word endings – y, ed, ing, s, es Reading Fluency Skill: Paying attention to the ending of words and then putting the base word and ending together to read the whole word Spelling: Unit 2.3 – s or es |

Writer’s Workshop |
This week we will use the lists we created to write complete sentences based on a topic. We will also add nouns and proper nouns to our writing. |

Math |
Concepts that we will practice include subtracting two, counting by 5’s, making tallies, using a ruler to draw line segments, and counting coins (pennies, nickels, dimes). |

NEW and IMPORTANT- PK-1 Pajama Party for January 14 – This event has been postponed until the Spring. Reading Road Race Rally – Upcoming souvenir dates: 1/10 – Justman 1/24 Adickes The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally. We will participate in this with Mrs. Boyce’s class. Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week. A star should be colored in for each reading session. Please note that shoeboxes (Glove Compartments) can stay at home to be filled with the souvenirs that are brought home each week. PAST NEWS- Christmas Activities – Thank you for the gingerbread house and Christmas party donations. We will have a class gift exchange ($7-$10) at our party on Dec. 22nd. Special Collection – In response to the novel The Family Under the Bridge, the Lutheran Junior Honor Society is collecting clothing, winter coats, hats, and gloves as well as toiletry items for Bob’s Under the Bridge, an organization that directly ministers to the homeless. Thank you for all your help! Room Parents/Liason- Thank you to Hilary Collins, Meagan Steinke and Jessica Loppnow for volunteering as our room parents this year. Snack – Please send a healthy snack with your child each day. I will have extra snacks available in case it is forgotten on a busy morning.
