Dear 5th Grade parents and students,
The first trimester is completed! Congratulations! As we move on to the second trimester let’s keep encouraging our fifth graders to use the gifts God has given to all of them and to do their very best in every subject each day. Consider setting 2-3 specific goals at home relating to organization and/or work habits and ask about how your student is doing with those goals each week during your family’s “Sunday/Weekly Meeting”.

- Dec 2: Report Cards sent home with oldest child (please ask your child for these if you haven’t seen them yet)
- Dec. 10: Choirs and Band Concert 2:00 and 6:30
- Dec. 12: Jesus is the Reason Celebration
- Dec. 15: Grades 5-8 Advent Service 6:30
- Wed Dec 22: 1/2 Day SCHOOL – 11:40am Dismissal
- Dec 23-Jan 2: NO SCHOOL – CHRISTMAS BREAK
- Jan 3: Classes Resume
- Jan 5-18: MAP testing (specific dates will be announced)
- Jan 20: Parent-Teacher Conferences: 3:30 – 7:00
- Jan 21: 11:40 dismissal for remaining P/T Conferences: 12:00 – 2:00
Science Donations: We are going to be needing some household items for science labs in the coming weeks. Please consider a donation if you are able. We are looking for: two packets of soup mix, some sand in ziplock bag, a few small Kool-Aid packets, and 10-12 glow sticks (preferably the same color). Thanks for considering!
Secret Angels: A Christmas tradition in the middle school is our Secret Angel gift exchange. Students draw the name of one of their classmates and surprise this person with treasures and treats between December 1 and our last full day, December 21. Please spend only $10 total. Some students provide smaller gifts more frequently (often one per week) while other students leave hints and give one a little bit larger gift. Either way, know that this is a lot of fun. The fifth graders have already picked names and hopefully they have shared this with you!
The 5-8 grade Advent service is December 15. Please keep this date open. All of the fifth graders will have a speaking part for this service. Practice for this service started this past week.
December Book Club / Service Project: In response to our book club novel The Family Under the Bridge, the Lutheran Junior Honor Society is collecting clothing, winter coats, hats, and gloves as well as toiletry items for Bob’s Under the Bridge, an organization that directly ministers to the homeless. Please consider a family donation this holiday season.
Daily Assignment Printouts – Each day, your 5th grader will be bringing home a printout of all of the 5th grade teachers’ lesson plans for the day. Please know this is a temporary way to communicate with you and assist our fifth graders with work time efficiency and independence. Please ask your child to show you the printout each night. This will help you to confirm if your child is filling out his/her assignment notebook accurately. It will also give you the opportunity to see their list of homework assignments and how much time it should take them to complete their workload for that evening. Students should not be spending hours and hours doing homework each night in 5th grade.
