Weekly Update September 18th

Weekly Updates

We survived our first five-day week of school.  The kids are champs and have adjusted nicely to the school routine.  Today you will see the brown folder coming home.  I’m sending it home today so you have a chance to see how they’ve been doing on their spelling and vocabulary practice prior to the test on Monday.  Coming up on Monday we will also start our last MAP testing session with a focus on math.  A good night’s sleep on Sunday with a healthy breakfast Monday morning will definitely help your child’s focus.

What We Did This Week

Reading: Your child should continue to bring an independent reading book with them that travels back and forth from home to school.  Ideally your child should be spending an average of 20 minutes/evening reading their book.  Next week we will be tracking whether or not we are prepared for class with our independent reading book.  We will also start tracking individual progress of independent reading books.  This week we read a biography together in class.  Our reading strategy focus was identifying the main idea and supporting details of our story.  Our grammar skill was identifying compound subjects and predicates.

Writing: This week we continued to focus on how to correctly write and punctuate dialogue.

Math: We started a unit that will focus on addition and subtraction strategies.  Our next test will fall right around October 1st.

Religion: We are continuing to learn about the Israelites entering the promised land.  This week we learned about Rahab from Joshua 2.  We learned that sometimes God uses other Christians to assure us or encourage us.  We looked up Bible verses that we could use to offer encouragement to others.

Spelling: Our next spelling test will be this Monday, September 21st.

Social Studies: We are working through a unit with a focus on Native Americans.  This week we learned about Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands region of North America.
