Week of January 21

National Lutheran Schools Week!  This is week is always my favorite of the year!  I remember celebrating as a grade school student at my small school called Trinity Lutheran School in Long Prairie, Minnesota.  Unfortunately that school no longer exists.  Let us pray that Lutheran education continues to remain a part of so many communities and especially our St. Paul community.  I am blessed to share Jesus with my students each and every day.  It is a true gift!

  • A Little More NLSW specialties: There are special dress up days planned for each day next week.  Your child should have them written in his/her assignment notebook.  Footwear dress code DOES NOT change for the week however.  On Monday, students will need to wear pants outside.  Shorts must be covered.  Additionally, please wear black/white for church on Sunday to present a more unified picture as students share their song.  Students with
  • Student-Led Parent Teacher Conferences: Thank you to those that have already signed up.  Remember that your child should be a part of this conference.  Please fill out the google form in the email, so that it may create an additional framework for our time together.
  • Reading: Following our mystery unit, we will take a look at a Jigsaw Jones mystery novel.  Students will also be presenting our posters to the 2nd graders in the near future as that didn’t get to happen this week.
  • Writing: Our writing conversation this week will include conversations regarding common/proper nouns.  We will also go back to informative writing with us working on introductions and conclusions.
  • Math: This week we will wrap up Unit 6 – Connect Area and Multiplication. We will review again and then test on Wednesday.  Unit 7 – Fractions – will also begin this week.  If your child didn’t achieve ninja status, please continue to work.  While full credit won’t be given, it is important for students to master their tables.  Ninja grades will be finalized at the end of 2nd
  • Spelling: Continuing in Unit 3, we will focus on the vowel digraphs /ir/, /ur/, and /er/.  Our final test will be on Thursday due to no school on Friday.
  • Religion: Our lessons this week will see us discovering Awesome Australia through Gospel Adventures in connection with National Lutheran Schools Week.
  • Memory Work: As we continue to remember our memory routine, Tuesday’s memory will begin with the books of the Old Testament through Obadiah while Thursday’s is Psalm 65:8 which correlates with our Religion unit and discovery of Awesome Australia.
  • Character Development: Our fourth catchphrase is “Respond Instead of React”.  We will focus on developing strategies that allow us to respond appropriately rather than giving a harsh reaction that causes deeper trouble.  This will be our final week with this catchphrase.  However, due to National Lutheran Schools Week and Awesome Australia, we won’t spend much time here.
  • Weekly Quote: Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.  Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!  He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate – Psalm 127:3-5
