LAST CALL for the Reading Curriculum Calendar Fundraiser sheets. 🙂

Circle May 8th on your calendars:  DC & Planning Meeting!

As the 8th grade just returned from their Washington D.C. trip, know this will be you next year!! 🙂  Mrs. Schumann gives you a lot of information -- purpose, stops, cost, and fundraising opportunities.

Although May 31st is weeks away, that last day of school -- and our 8th grade graduation -- will be here quickly.  Traditionally, hosting the reception and creating the parting gifts has been the 7th grade class gift to the graduating 8th graders.  For the past number of years, the reception and the gifts the class provided were truly appreciated by the graduates and their families, and I know that we also will want to make graduation as special as we can for this year's class.

Please be looking for information about the many ways we all can help the families of graduates celebrate.  We will need volunteers to help with any number of the following:  providing food, creating a memory page, ordering and assembling a gift, decorating the FLC, volunteering to help with the service and with serving at the reception, and even help with clean-up.  Panther Parents has a budget for this event, and if we all work together, we can organize and be a part of a truly memorable evening for this year’s graduates and their families.  Amazingly, next year, our kids and we families will be on the receiving end

Thank you to Mrs. Kellerman and Mrs. Passmore for coordinating all of us.

English

  • We’re working on transferring the work done on our outlines into a working draft.  It’s a LOT of work, but learning this process now will ease research work done in the future.
  • We’re building on our knowledge of relative pronouns and adjective clauses, which add definition to a noun.  We’ll concentrate on using “who” -- adding detail to a character in our sentences.

Health

Math

This week we will wrap up Module 7 on inequalities and start Module 8.  Our topics in Module 8 include: vertical and adjacent angles, complimentary and supplementary angles.  If we stay on schedule and have a good review day, the test on Module 7 will be on Wednesday, May 8.

PE

Welcome back to PE!  We have some great activities planned this year.

Reading

  • We’ve begun our next whole-class novel, Elephant Run, by building background knowledge about the setting and character as well the traditions of the Burmese culture. The novel explores the Pacific Theater in WWII, allowing us to learn more about this time in history and to realize the depth of good in so many people.
  • The class and I shared a few laughs about the title of this novel, wondering what it was going to be about.  We discovered through reading nonfiction articles that elephants really did serve a valuable role for both the Axis and Allied Powers during WWII.  We also realized the reality of a good mahout, elephant driver.  The readings this week will have us walk in the shoes of the people who have been denied independence as well as understand the depth of betrayal.

Religion

We are starting unit 8, I Am For You, in Friendzy. We are also looking at the 4th and 5th petitions of the Lord's Prayer.  Memory is the 3rd petition of the Lord's Prayer with meaning as found on pages 20-21 of Luther's Small Catechism and will be due Thursday. The final sermon note #9 is due Monday, May 13.
