Weekly Update for September 11th

Weekly Updates

We had a busy yet successful week in 4th grade.  This week we really worked on getting into our academic routine.  We were graced with yet another four day school week which has helped as we ease into things.  This weekend we have our church picnic. The students in K-8 will all be singing at the 11:00 outdoor service.  Bring a blanket or some chairs and come worship with us.  It wouldn’t hurt to arrive a little early.  Stay afterwards for food, games, bouncy houses, and bingo.  On Monday we will begin MAP testing.  It will definitely help your child focus better on testing if they are starting Monday well rested and have had a healthy breakfast.

What We Did This Week

Reading: Your child should continue to bring an independent reading book with them that travels back and forth from home to school.  Ideally your child should be spending an average of 20 minutes/evening reading their book.  This week in class we practiced searching the text to see how details in a text can help us identify the author’s purpose for writing.  Our grammar skill was understanding the complete subject and predicate of a sentence.

Writing: We are starting to plan and organize our personal narratives.  The students will have dialogue in their narrative so we practiced how to properly write and tag dialogue.

Math: We wrapped up our place value unit this week.  The kids have an optional extra credit assignment to reinforce the skills from this unit.

Religion: This week we read about the Israelites entering Canaan.  We learned that we too can use God’s Word to encourage others.

Spelling: Our next spelling test will not be on Friday.  Instead, we will be extending each unit to about 6 days.  The next spelling test will be Monday, September 21st.

Social Studies: Thank you so much for allowing your child the time to gather information for their September 11th interviews.  The kids did a great job presenting their interview reports.  Next week we will start a unit about Native Americans.
