Week of September 13

A Full Week Ahead: Our soft start is over.  Many five day weeks loom ahead.  Students are starting to get into the groove and expectation of the school year and routine.  What a blessing to be together and enjoy learning!  Rest up this weekend as we move through our first full week.

  • Singing on Sunday: The whole school sings at the church picnic on Sunday during the 11 am service.  Come, sing, worship, and stay after for food, fellowship, and fun.  It’s a great time!!
  • DOT DAY! Please dress in dots on Tuesday, September 15th for official Dot Day.  We will have a special snack followed by many fun dot activities.  If you signed up for something you may bring it to school up to Tuesday morning.  Please see my email for the link to sign up.
  • Map Testing: We will take our first Reading Map test on Thursday right at the beginning of the day.  Please get a good night’s sleep before with a good breakfast to start off everybody with a thinking brain.  While this is only a snapshot of your child’s abilities, it does help me in planning to meet their needs.
  • ELA (English Language Arts) Checklist: Your child may talk about an ELA checklist which is a list of items related to our reading, writing, and spelling that I’m looking for students to work on while I’m connecting with small groups or individual students.  I usually star (*) the top items which is the indication that these should be completed for a grade.  The other items are for them to accomplish if they have time.  Students typically have about 90 minutes per week to get these items done.  Most will never need to complete something on the list as homework, while others may not use time as wisely and need to finish at home.  I’ll send in my email an example so you can see what I mean.
  • Reading: Our Reading curriculum continues this week as students discover much through reading Cocoliso which is a realistic fiction. We will also take a closer look at analyzing characters.
  • Writing: As we get into our routine we will be talking about the what to do when we think we are done, what to do if we are stuck on spelling, and free write using our given strategies.  Additionally we will talk about a grammar piece which includes identifying verbs.
  • Math: This is taught by Miss Szydel. Students will begin working with Unit 2 – Use Place Value to Add and Subtract Fluently to 1,000.  This past week in math, we worked on different ways to represent four-digit numbers, rounding multi-digit numbers, and estimating sums and differences. This upcoming week, we are going to celebrate Dot Day on Tuesday! We will do some fun math activities related to our Dot candy. We will also be talking about different properties and patterns used when adding.
  • Spelling: Each week students will be introduced to ten specific words that have a shared pattern.  This week the pattern is adding an inflected ending – er, ed, ing.  While learning the words is important, it is essential for students to understand the rule.  Students will have the chance to work with the words throughout the week.  Our final test will be on Friday.
  • Religion: This week we will continue to work through Genesis and talk about the Tower of Babel and how Abraham trusted God.
  • Memory Work: Memory work/spelling sheets will be sent home on Monday.  Tuesday’s verse corresponds with Luther’s Small Catechism and is the 1st  This is the first week of our journey through all of the commandments.  Students must know the commandment and what does this mean.  Thursday’s verse pertains to our Bible story in Psalm 37:5.
  • Powerful Panther Pillars: This year we will be working through the fruits of the spirit through a variety of means.  Our first pillar is LOVE!
  • Weekly Verse: Therefore my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. – 1 Corinthians 15:58
