What is 1st Grade Learning?

Religion
|
We will read about the Death of John the Baptist and The Woman in Simon’s House. We will discuss how God the Holy Spirit helps us see our sin and our need for the Savior. We will also give thanks to God by acting in loving ways toward God and others.

Reading
|
We will continue our reading unit on the four seasons and weather. This week we will read the story Signs of Winter.
Phonics: Open and closed syllables
Reading Comprehension Skill: We will practice retelling stories with characters, setting, and plot (beginning, middle and end)
Spelling: – 5.5 begin, cabin, hotel, label, melon, robot, seven, topic, *should, *today

This week we will write cards for our reading buddies and mothers. We will also write in our journals.
Grammar: Capital letters and Punctuation

Math
|
Unit 12: Measurement and Data- Students will organize, represent and interpret data.

Science
|
Forces and Fossils – This week we will learn about fossils, dinosaurs and forces. |

Social Studies
|
Unit 5 – Our Nation – We will begin this unit by reading about John Henry. The students will be able to describe where they live (city, state, country, continent) using the activity Me On the Map.

Reading Road Race Rally – The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally. Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week. A star should be colored in for each reading session. Sheets should be turned in each Friday. The shoebox can stay at home to keep all of the souvenirs in.
