What is 1st Grade Learning? 

Religion

Our Old Testament stories conclude this week by reading about The Tabernacle and The Day of Atonement.  We will learn how the church is a special place to worship God and how we should thank him for sending Jesus to shed his blood and die to take away our sins and save us.                    

Virtue of the Week:  COURAGE: God’s power for you to overcome fear.  How can you courageously face the storms of life?

Memory:  – 3rd Commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 

Reading

We will continue our nonfiction reading unit.  The students will review making predictions and rereading to make sure they understand the details in their books.   We will also practice using expression while retelling facts.   

Phonics: Word endings – y, ed, ing, s, es, er, est

Reading Fluency Skill:  Paying attention to the ending of words and then putting the base word and ending together to read the whole word

Spelling:  Unit 2.8 – er, ir, ur            bird first girl hurt sir burn fur her shirt were *then *next

Writer’s Workshop

This week the students will begin to get information for non-fiction ocean animal research reports.   

Math

Concepts that we will practice include identifying and adding doubles plus 1 facts, 

Science

Ocean and Desert Environments

Social Studies

Lesson 3:  Landforms – The students will compare and contrast water (ocean, lake, river) and landforms (hill, mountain, valley, plains).

NEW and IMPORTANT- 

100th Day of School – Wednesday, February 2nd marks the 100th Day of School.  We will base many of our activities on Wednesday around the number 100.  Please send in 100 edible items for a class snack.  

National Lutheran Schools Week-  We enjoyed celebrating our Lutheran school this week with a variety of activities, dress-up days and special events.  It is such a blessing to be able to learn and praise God together.  Thank you for your prayers and support.    

January  Chapel Offerings – Zambia Mission Project

Parent/Teacher Conferences I enjoyed meeting with you at parent/teacher conferences.  Thank you for your support and extra efforts in your child’s learning.  

PK-1 Pajama Party for January 14 –  This event has been postponed until April 22nd.

Reading Road Race Rally            Upcoming souvenir dates:  1/24  Adickes    2/7 Gridley  2/28  Opitz   The reading log that was sent home will be used for our Reading Road Race Rally.  We will participate in this with Mrs. Boyce’s class.  Please have your child read at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week.  A star should be colored in for each reading session.  Please note that shoeboxes (Glove Compartments) can stay at home to be filled with the souvenirs that are brought home each week.         

PAST NEWS-

Christmas Activities –  Thank you for the gingerbread house and Christmas party donations.  We will have a class gift exchange ($7-$10) at our party on Dec. 22nd.  

Special Collection – In response to the novel The Family Under the Bridge, the Lutheran Junior Honor Society is collecting clothing, winter coats, hats, and gloves as well as toiletry items for Bob’s Under the Bridge, an organization that directly ministers to the homeless. Thank you for all your help!

Room Parents/Liason-    Thank you to Hilary Collins, Meagan Steinke and Jessica Loppnow for volunteering as our room parents this year.   

Snack –             Please send a healthy snack with your child each day.  I will have extra snacks available in case it is forgotten on a busy morning.  Water bottles can be used throughout the day and can be refilled at the drinking fountain.
