Fifth Grade Weekly Update…Sept 14-18, 2026

5th Grade Families,

Update: We have made it! 11 days in the books!  Please note that we will be MAP testing for math on Monday (morning) and will be testing reading on Thursday. Please be sure your child is rested, eats breakfast and knows we are taking the test. Next week, we will be started to hold those students more accountable for tardiness and supplies. To help with this, we spent some time today tidying up our lockers for next week and talking about accountability, privileges, choice and responsibility.  Please know that if your child struggles with this in the coming days/weeks, it is OK to allow them to struggle. Talk to them about accepting consequences (when applicable) and making choices/changes to prevent future consequences. Thank you so much for all of your support at home.  As I mentioned last week, classes are starting to pick up steam this week… Expect the homework load to begin to increase a little bit and more assessments (quizzes & tests) in the coming weeks. We are still settling into our routines. Brown envelopes will come home Monday again. Let’s be proactive and continue to ask to see those every Monday after school/work.  Thank you!

INFORMATION/UPDATES:

📝MAP Testing: 5th grade will take both of their MAP tests this week. These tests are a great opportunity to get a snapshot of student learning. They will take their Math MAP test on Monday and their Reading MAP test on Thursday.

📂📎Middle School Papers: This Monday, brown envelopes will be coming home again. If you did not see your child’s graded work last week Tuesday, please ask them about it and be sure you are signing their envelopes once you go through their work with them.  A good rule of thumb is to keep all of your child’s school work for the entire trimester either in a file or box at home. Sometimes, a paper gets home before it gets handed in to me, or occasionally I might accidentally hand an assignment back that didn’t get into the gradebook (or it doesn’t save).  After grades come out on trimester report cards, feel free to recycle them! I will send a reminder at that time.

📁✅Take-Home Folder/Assignment Notebook: These are two very important resources for students to be using in each of their classes and bringing home at the end of each day. All homework completed throughout the week should be kept in this folder (no other handouts), even if it is completed. This way, you can look over their work if you feel it’s necessary.  I encourage you to look over this with your child nightly – at least for the first few weeks – to be helping them build this habit. The time you invest now will majorly pay off during the rest of the school year! It is much easier to build a good habit than break a bad habit later.

🧑‍Room Parent update:  A BIG thank you to Jamie Nevins for volunteering to be our room parent this year.  Please watch for emails from her on how you can help this year. Thanks!

⛪🌭🎵Church Picnic/K-8 Sing in Church: On Sunday September 13th, we will be gathering to celebrate St. Paul at the church and school picnic. K-8 is scheduled to sing at the outdoor service at 11am. All students are expected to attend. If for some reason you are unable, please send an email to Ms. Bremer to let her know as soon as you can. We appreciate the open and thoughtful communication.

🧑‍🔬CALLING ALL ENGINEERS & SCIENTISTS: I am looking for volunteers to help with my “Bring Your Scientist/Engineer to School Day” events this year.  If you (or someone you know) works in the field of engineering or science, please reach out if you may be interested in doing a mini-career day with our fifth graders this year. I would have you tell students a little bit about what you do and/or we could do a Q&A session.  I am always looking to plant seeds for future scientists & engineers!  You would need the flexibility to come to St. Paul ONE day this school year between 9am and 10:45am. Please contact me if you (or someone you know) is interested. Thanks!
