Okay for Now

• We should finish with the novel the week of October 5th.  In preparation for that, we’ll be working on a project and reading this coming week.
• Just as in life, Doug is balancing the successes, such as learning to read, with the hardships, such as being judged by others.
• We’ll also connect to historical circumstances of the time, especially as Lucas, Doug’s oldest brother, returns from Vietnam.  We’ll build background knowledge on the treatment of US veterans and their physical and emotional conditions when returning from Vietnam.  The novel also shows the challenges faced by those with disabilities before the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• Expect nearly daily reading reflections as well as thematic reader responses, both of which will be found on Google Classroom.
