May Day! This could be heard and thought of as a call for help; or it could be understood as the first day of May with a tradition of dropping gifts at people’s doors and doing a sort of ding/dong ditch. If you thought of it in terms of a call for help, hopefully that call rises out to a trusted individual or even better a call out to our Heavenly Father that longs to be there for each of us. If you thought of it in terms of the first day of May, perhaps today is a good day to do something nice for someone you maybe wouldn’t normally. At any rate, let’s celebrate all that God gives to us especially seen in these days of Spring as new life blooms forth.
- National Day of Prayer: On Thursday, May 7, our school will participate in National Day of Prayer beginning at 8:30am at the flagpole on the north side of campus. During this time, we will pray together and recognize our local police officers, firefighters, veterans, and celebrate the 250th anniversary of our country. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue in honor of this special day. If the weather does not allow us to be outside, the event will take place inside the church.
- Shorts in May: Starting Friday, May 1, students are allowed to wear shorts to school for the rest of the school year. Shorts must be mid-thigh length or longer and may have a decorative frayed hem. Spandex, biker shorts, cutoffs (jeans or sweatpants), torn shorts, tight or short shorts, and athletic shorts are not permitted. Students in PreK-4th grade may wear athletic shorts on non-chapel days with the understanding that they are mid-thigh length or longer.
- Worship Service Change: Please note that St. Paul’s Sunday service time is changing temporarily. For the next six weeks, Sunday Services will be at 8:00 and 10:30 with a dedicated Sunday School hour at 9:15. Saturday and Monday services do not change.
- Reading: Our final unit of our reading curriculum has begun. Unit 5 is all about solutions. We will read a fable this week. Through our reading of Aesop’s Fox, we will infer theme, evaluate details, describe use of imagery, and use precise verbs.
- Writing: Gearing up for a new week in writing, we will work in the mode of narrative writing. Students will make a final draft of a story that includes a natural disaster, location climate, and dialogue. These stories will be due on May 15.
- Math: This is taught by Miss Schulz. This week students will work on Unit 11 – Perimeter. This is a great unit for students to practice their multiplication skills. Knowing the fact families is important especially when talking about perimeter.
- Spelling: This week our spelling words focus on words with a final stable syllable –le, -ture, -ive, -ize. Please remember that spelling is not just about memorizing the ten words but also learning the skill and pattern associated with the words.
- Religion: This week we will continue to learn about Jesus as he begins his ministry after his Baptism. Our stories will include the parable of the farmer and the seed as well as Jesus calming the storm.
- Memory Work: Memory work/spelling sheets will be sent home on Monday. Tuesday’s memory is the second part of the second article of the Apostle’s Creed which should be familiar. Thursday’s memory is connected to our Religion stories and is found in Deuteronomy 6:18a.
- Powerful Panther Pillars: New this year, students will be working through the fruits of the spirit (now known as Panther Pillars) with their classmates and chapel families. Our ninth and final pillar is SELF-CONTROL.
- Weekly Quote: I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. – Psalm 121:1-2
