SECOND GRADE SPECIFICS FOR THE WEEK OF FEB. 6
Friday, February 10 is School Colors Day
Thank you for your classroom donations!
MEMORY WORK
LUTHER'S MORNING PRAYER
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.
For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Your child may recite memory work any given morning of the week. He or she may recite one or more verses at a time. Second grade is expected to memorize the Bible references as well. The assigned work should be circled in your child's memory book. These will be crossed off at the end of the week when new work is assigned. Please keep your child's book in his/her HOME folder. Friday is the final day to say memory for the week unless your child has been absent. Please have your child work on his/her memory work at home. He/she should know it when they walk into the classroom.
PLANTS ON MY PLATE PROJECT
Your child should have brought the start of this project home on Friday, February 3. Using supermarket ads, please have your child complete this project and return to school by Tuesday, February 7.
VALENTINE EXCHANGE
Second grade will have a valentine exchange on Tuesday, February 14. Please have your child bring a valentine for each classmate: Autumn, Mikey, Kiley, Nolari, Kyle, Brock, Logan, Mark, Noah, Myanna, Max, Cole, Ellie, Brett, Grace, Analiese, Sharon, Madeline, Ava, and Micah.
In addition to the valentive, have your child bring a decorated box, bag, or container for collecting his/her valentines. This box, bag, or container should be brought to school by Monday, February 13, since children will place valentines into classmates' containers first thing Tuesday morning as they arrive. Thank you!
HELPING YOUR CHILD EARN A TICKET TO SIX FLAGS
Information regarding the Read to Suceed Program was sent home Wednesday, January 25. Your child's participation is optional. Six hours of at home reading by Friday, February 27 is required. That's only 15 minutes a day. Fill in the missing ifor at the top of the form sent home and keep track of the books read and the time spent reading. Use the back of the form if necessary. Please initial each entry, sign the form at the bottom, and return no later than Friday, February 27. Have fun!
FACT HOMEWORK
Once your child passes a fact practice with at least a 23 out of 25 or 93 out of 100, he/she will not be required to do any further fact practice or fact homework sheets until the next fact assessment is taken. Fact flashcards should come home with your child if he or she has fact homework to do. Please have your child practice his/her facts using the flashcards first. Then have him/her do the fact homework sheet (side B). Only 2 1/2 minutes will be given for each fact practice.
THE WRITING PROCESS
Now and then second grade will bring home their Drafting Notebooks to revise and edit. Making revisions and self-editing is a skill that second graders begin to practice. When editing a draft, your child will play COPS.
C is for Capitals...Have your child check for capitals and use the proper symbols to show if a capital is needed or not needed.
O is for Omissions...Have your child read his/her draft aloud to listen for omitted words which may interfere with meaning and/or fluency. Cross out words, phrases, and sentences being removed and insert new wording using a ^.
P is for Punctuation...Have your child check for the correct use of periods, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes, commas, and quotation marks (if used). Cross out the wrong punctuation using a slash and place the correct punctuation above or next to it.
S is for Spelling...When writing a draft the writer does not focus on correct spelling. He/she focuses on getting his/her thoughts into words. Have your child circle any words he/she thinks or feels may be misspelled. Have your child use his/her Handbook for Everyday Writers to look up or record (with your help) correct spellings. If the handbook is left at school, this procedure can be completed at school. The Handbook for Everyday Writers should be kept in the HOME folder for use at school and home.
Note: An editing guide will be placed on the inside cover of the Drafting Notebook.
GIVE ME FIVE
Second grade has been working on the following skills. Your help is needed and appreciated in promoting and encouraging these skills at home as well.
Eyes on Speaker (Encourage your child to look at the person who is speaking to them. Likewise, they should look at the person to whom they are speaking.)
Quiet (Encourage your child to quietly wait his/her turn to speak. Do not allow him/her to speak out over others.)
Be still (Encourage your child to sit or stand still while speaking or being spoken to. This is one skill that can be practiced as the family has dinner conversation around the table.)
Hands free, put everything down. (Do not allow your child to play with items or fidget when listening to a speaker. Fidgeting shows a lack of interest in what others have to share. Showing interest is sometimes a matter of showing courtesy.)
Listen (Encourage your child to listen without speaking or responding aloud. There are situations that do not require verbal responses. Listening = Hearing + Doing)
Food for thought: It is always possible to unbutton a coat and to start over; it is not always possible to unbutton a life and make a new beginning. Habits we form as children establish the pattern of future habits.
