Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized incentive reading program to be used independently by students. It is a simple procedure. A student reads a book that is on our AR list. Each book has a designated point value based on its length and difficulty. After finishing the book, the student then takes a quiz on the book. This can be done in their classrooms or in the computer lab. Usually, the quizzes consist of 5 to 15 questions that are based on the content of the book. A student must achieve 60% or higher on a quiz to receive points. The program keeps track of a student's accumulated points. Please remember that AR is not a remedial reading program. Its purpose is to encourage reading and improve independent reading skills.
In Kindergarten, I read an Accelerated Reader book to the class, and then have each student individually take the test. A printout will be sent home saying how your child did on the quiz. At the end of the year each student may redeem their AR points at the Accelerated Reader store.
How to Get Children to Eat Healthy and Like it!
Experiment!
You may be surprised by what children like or are willing to try. Be creative and listen to their ideas. Unique food combinations may appeal to your children but not to you. Try not to let your own food preferences influence their choices. Keep an open-mind and strive to provide a variety of different foods from each of the five food groups - whole grains, whole fruits and vegetables, lean protein and low-fat dairy sources (for children 2 years or older; children younger than 2 years of age should drink whole milk).
If at first you don't succeed try, try again.
1. Children may not like a certain food the first time it is introduced but continue to offer it because they may accept it after being exposed to it five or more times.
2. Offer new foods at the beginning of meals or snacks when children are the most hungry.
3. Encourage them to try it in a matter-of-fact manner rather than forcing or bribing.
4. Before offering children a new food, discuss the food. It's color, texture, aroma, size, shape rather than whether it tastes "good" or "bad."
5. Be encouraging and provide a positive and healthy food environment.
6. Help children become accustomed to the same food prepared in different ways such as raw vegetables versus steamed versus roasted or grilled.
Be a positive role model.
1. Prepare and eat a variety of different foods.
2. Be daring and try a new fruit or vegetable each week or month.
3. Make the beginning of each month, "Daring Day," and prepare a breakfast, lunch or dinner dish with a new food item such as a different type of grain like quinoa or couscous or a new vegetable (e.g. yams or asparagus) or try an exotic fruit (e.g. star fruit, mango, pomegranate).
4. Be adventurous as a family and you may just be surprised by what your taste buds like!

The kindergartners will have show and tell time every other Friday. Our first show & tell time will be Friday, September 9th. I ask that the item to share is able to fit into a brown grocery bag or their backpack(no bigger please). This will give your child the chance to formulate sentences and talk about what they brought. We also talk about the difference between questions and stories during this time. Thank you for your help.
Our class will be making mini sight word books to practice words at home and to practice our words through-out the school year. This will be a valuable tool to use at home and school for our reading fun. We will be adding to our books biweekly, therefore I would like the books returned every Friday. This will enable us to do in class activities with them and add any additional words if needed for the upcoming week. Thank you for your help in making this a success for your child.
