· The Student Council minutes and agenda have to be approved the day before the meeting
· Think about January and especially February ideas
FOLLOW THROUGH ON YOUR JOBS
Approaching Someone for an Approval-
- Explain your purpose and where you are from
- Set up a meeting place and time
- Be prepared with paper and pencil to write the meeting time and date down
Actions:
Think about a way for the Student Council to be involved with the Open House in Jan.
· Take people on tours around school
· Have a “Clean Up” day where everyone is involved in cleaning up the school
Locker contest for Valentines Day instead of Christmas
Think of ways to support the St. Paul basketball tournament
· Hang up posters around the school
· Decorate posters as a class

· Will post rules in hallway
Ideas
· Suggestions have to be passed through Mr. Yurk
· Sweatpants in dress code- last Friday of every month
· Break in hallways- monitors to be assigned by class
· Bathroom passes
· Salad bar

Ideas:
- A Christmas locker decoration contest
- To vote for locker, drop pennies in jar. Pennies = votes
- Penny drive
- Having recess in the gym for colder months
- There would be a schedule for which classes in gym
- Request box in each class
- Requests to be taken only in writing
- Microwaves for upper grades over lunch?
- Have break back in hallways!

- Think about yes or no to even address it
- Write down and think about all the pro’s and con’s of each idea

St. Paul Student Council
St. Paul Student Council is offered to 5-8th graders. Students learn about setting an agenda, servant hood, brainstorming ideas, problem solving and voting, setting action items, advertising, citizenship skills and teamwork. The four expectations of student council members are; 1) show your Christian leadership to the student body 2) talk to your classmates and friends about activities they’re interested in, 3) bring their ideas and your ideas to our meetings, 4) work together as a team to plan activities.
Who Can Participate?
The Middle School Student Council consists of the students in Grades 5-8. Members are elected by their classmates (2 representatives for each homeroom). The executive committee is selected from the classroom representatives.
We are looking for some dynamic, enthusiastic, and committed Middle Schoolers to join the Student Council for this year. Qualities necessary for any member on student council are:
· Leadership skills – Are you willing to lead committees and be a representative for your class?
· Creative – Are you able to think of new and exciting activities and fund raisers for the student council?
· Communicative – Are you able to share ideas with other student council members, your class and all of middle school?
· Team player – You could be working with a team to generate ideas and organize events for the Student Council.
· Responsibility – You may be responsible for running activities throughout the school and you must be reliable.
· Commitment – This is a yearlong activity and if you volunteer now, you will be expected to come to all meetings for the remainder of the year.
Students selected to serve on student council will have the following guidelines in order to participate in any activities and miss class time:
* must complete the application for nomination and approved by your homeroom
teacher
* must be passing all classes at all times
* must be a responsible citizen
* must follow all school rules
* must have permission from classroom or homeroom teacher to miss class
* must be current in homework and assignments
Constitution of St. Paul Lutheran Middle School Student Council
Article I
The purpose of this organization shall be to:
A) Be a servant to our Lord Jesus Christ in all we do
· B) Represent all St. Paul students in Student Council affairs. This will include discussions, decisions, and voting.
C) Work to make St. Paul Lutheran School the best place it can be for all students.
Article II
Membership qualifications:
· Members of the St. Paul Lutheran School Student Council should be good representatives of our school and its outcomes.
· All middle school students who have successfully completed the application for nomination, been approved by their homeroom teacher, passing all classes at all times, be a responsible citizen, follow all school rules, have permission from classroom or homeroom teacher to miss class, and be current in homework and assignments.
Article III
Officers
Section 1
The student council shall consist of the following, in order of descending authority:
A) President
B) Vice President
C) Secretary
D) Treasurer
E) Two representatives from each grade
Section 2
The duties of the president shall be to:
A) Preside over all meetings of the Student Council
B) Appoint Committees and their respective chair persons
C) Be the official representative of the Student Council
D) Work with the faculty advisors
The duties of the Vice President shall be to:
A) Preside over the meetings in the absence of the President
B) Work with the faculty advisors
The duties of the secretary shall be to:
A) Maintain accurate and complete minutes, attendance, and voting records of all meetings and activities
B) Work with the faculty advisors
The duties of all members shall be to:
A) Accept all inquiries, complaints, and suggestions from the student body
B) Relay these issues to the Council
C) Vote on motions presented during meetings
D) Attend all meetings, or must be excused prior to the meeting
E) Work with the faculty advisors
Article IV
Meetings
Section I
A) General membership meetings are held once every week.
B) These meetings consist of:
(1) Officer reports
(2) Committee reports
(3) Old business
(4) New business
C) Additional meetings may be called by the president if necessary.
Article V
Elections
A) Elections to the President , Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer positions shall take place at the beginning of each school year.
B) Any member of the Council may become a candidate for office. This is done through a self-nomination process. However, candidates for president must be in the 8th grade.
C) Before elections take place, each presidential nominee shall be permitted three (3) minutes to address the middle school student body, after which he/she may answer any question the students may have.
D) Elections will be by secret ballot. Those voting will be any and all members of the St. Paul Lutheran School present the day of the election.
E) The winner shall be declared as the nominee with the majority of the votes, a majority being defined as the nominee with a number of votes greater than half of those present.
F) In the case of more than two nominees, the winner will simply be the nominee with the most votes.
G) Newly elected officials shall assume their duties immediately.
Article VI
Constitution
A) This constitution shall take effect immediately.
B) Any proposed amendment to this constitution must be in written form when presented to the Council.
C) The approval of three-fourths (3/4) of the general membership as well as approval by the SC Advisor is required to ratify any constitutional amendment.
D) Any member may, at any time, request a copy of this constitution. The secretary must give him/her one within one week.
E) A copy of this constitution and bylaws shall be made available through the president's request at anytime.
